We are pleased to announce our Workshops which are guarenteed to inform you and entertain you. With four workshop sessions each boasting four options over two days we know you are going to find something that interests you!
Please note that all Workshop options, presenters and content are subject to change at the discretion of the CMBC Conference organising committee. Numbers are limited for some Workshops, priority will be given to fully paid registrations on a first received, first served basis.
WORKSHOP ONE: SATURDAY 9TH OCTOBER: 10.45 am - 12.00 pm
OPTION 1A: Making Lunchboxes Healthy & Fun - Dr Carolyn Lister, Plant & Food Research
Kids bored with the lunches you provide them (and don’t eat them!)? Do you find it hard thinking of ideas for lunches? This session will provide you with some ideas and inspiration not only for your kids lunchboxes (be it preschool, school or simply going on an outing) but also your own. The emphasis is on ensuring a healthy & balanced lunch; but this must also be fun and made with food they will eat.
Presented by our very own Dr Carolyn Lister - President of the Christchurch MBC and mother of five year old twins Rose & Finn. Carolyn has a PhD from Caterbury University and in her ‘spare time’ she leads a small group of scientists looking at the health benefits of plant-based foods. You will go away with lots of new ideas, tips and tricks plus a great understanding of family nutrition.
OPTION 1B: Active Movement - Adele Orangi, Sport Canterbury
Movement in the early years is vial for your children's physical development. It also enhances their social, emotional and intellectal growth. Learn about these areas of development and skills your children will need as they grow. Join Adele for simple and cost-effective activities to help you and your family get active and have fun, while building the foundations for a healthy future.
OPTION 1C: Floral Arranging - Jenny Harris, Canterbury Floral Arrangement Society
Join Jenny Harris, a talented designer to learn how to create a special atmosphere for any occassion by using beautiful floral arrangments. Jenny will teach you techniques using fresh flowers and foliages in traditional or modern fashion so you will be able to jazz up your dinner table and dazzle your friends. Your skills will be developed as you design table centrepieces that will be on show later for all to see!
OPTION 1D: Speech Development - Dean Sutherland, Speech & Language Therapist
It can be difficult to pinpoint why a child may be having difficulties with their speech development, but there are things you can do to help. Dean Sutherland, a speech and language therapist and father of twins, will take us through typical speech development; including errors, sounds, what's normal to expect, language, stuttering and why multiples are at greater risk! Dean will then introduce practical activites and guidelines for us to apply at home to help all our children with their oral development.

OPTION 2A: Drugs & Alcohol Awareness - DARE Foundation & NZ Police
The DARE Foundation and the NZ Police have developed a number of programmes tailored to New Zealanders of all ages. The programmes are designed to challenge children, parents and their communities to develop skills in DARE - Decision making, Assertiveness, Responsibility and Esteem - and enable them to make informed choices to live a powerful life.
We are pleased to have representatives from the DARE Foundation & NZ Police coming to make us aware about Drug and Alcohol use, so we can understand the community concerns, challenges and society pressures our growing children will face.
OPTION 2B: Ready for School? Chris Swanson, DP at Rolleston Primary School
So it is nearing the time for your multiples to be starting School. Do you split them or keep them together? This session is designed to go through some of the unique considerations you need to make before your multiples start School. Chris Swanson, Deputy Principle of Rolleston School and new-entrant teacher will give her perspective about multiples in the NZ School system and things to think when deciding on placement; such as their relationship, social development, and independence.
OPTION 2C: Button Necklace Making Craft - CMBC
Come and try your hand at this latest fashion trend. Button necklaces are easy to assemble, and look fantastic. For a small gold coin donation there will be a large arrangement of buttons to chose from (or bring your own). You'll learn a few techniques in how to make these funky recycled button necklaces that are the latest craze! Enjoy the tactile nature of the buttons in this relaxed workshop proudly brought to you by the our very own creative CMBC mums!
OPTION 2D: Special Needs Forum - Raewyn Alexander
We are pleased to welcome Raewyn Alexander from the Otago Multiple Birth Club - a National Conference regular. Raewyn will lead this informal forum giving you the chance to share experiences and knowledge, to network and make new contacts with others who have children with special needs.
NZMBA Forum #2: Pooling Club Resources
This is your opportunity to ask other Clubs "... how does your Club do this?" This NZMBA Forum initiative is about pooling resources from different clubs so every club can benefit without having to 'reinvent the wheel'. Bring along any resources your Club uses to share with others e.g. grant application forms, job descriptions, advertising request letters, budget templates, cashbook files etc. The NZMBA will facilitate the collation and sharing of these resources which can be used as a tool to assist in the everyday running of your Club.

OPTION 3A: Eco-living & Sustainability - awaiting speaker confirmation

Our schools can be more than just places where kids go to learn, they can be catalysts for change and centres of innovation and community development. OPTION 3B: Performance Pilates - Mike McMillen, Clinial Pilates Instructor, Gymworkz
Whether you have never tried Pilates before, or a regular attendee, all are welcome to this free Performance Pilates session with our local Pilates guru - Mike McMillen.
Pilates helps align and reshape the body by building core strength, increasing flexibility , improving your posture and co-ordination, and promotes a focused mind. Pilates is well known to help with muscle imbalances, enhancing sport performance, addressing post-operative needs, restoring ease in daily activities and with the prevention of injuries.
So whether you have a specific need, just want to give it a go, or are already reaping the benefits of a Pilates workout - come along to this one hour session - you'll be guarenteed to leave refreshed, alert and wanting more!
OPTION 3C: Brain Gym - Sally Goldsworthy, NZ Registered Kinesiologist
So what is Brain Gym? Brain Gym is a simple and highly effective system of targeted activities that prepare the brain and entire nervous system for optimal performance in all areas. Brain Gym exercises are fun and easy to do, and are particularly effective for academic skills.
Trained in Kinesiology techniques, Sally Goldsworthy will discuss meridian lines and pathways (also used in acupuncture and acupressure) to teach you the basic Brain Gym exercises such as positive points, hook-ups and balance buttons. This incorporates gentle physical movements to co-ordinate the brain and body for greater productivity and learning for all of your family to benefit from. OPTION 3D: Card-making Craft - Josien van Haastrecht, Hands Craft Shop
A local craft tutor, Josien van Haastrecht will run this workshop to deliver you the basics of making your own greeting cards. Learn about paper layering, stamping and embossing, as well as those little finishing details from one of the best!
WORKSHOP FOUR: SUNDAY 10TH OCTOBER: 1.00 pm - 2.00 pm
OPTION 4A: Creating more balance in your life - Lenette Moore, Tutor from Canterbury College of Natural Medicine
This workshop will explore simple, effective, and powerful principals aimed to assist you in creating a more balanced and effective life:
* the impact your thought patterns and habits have on your life, and how changes can be made to create a greater sense of balance,
* ways of being that no longer serve a purpose for you, creating a potential for change to a more effective and balanced life.
OPTION 4B: What not to wear! Becks Mason, Style 4 U
This workshop is run by Personal Stylist, Becks Mason. She will take you on a journey to discover what not to wear! The discussion will give an introduction to colour consultation, understanding your body propotions and shape, and how to chose a wardrobe to compliment you along with revamping some of your old favourites. It will no doubt leave you heading home to declutter your wardrobe and off for some retail therapy!
OPTION 4C: Music for Preschoolers - Julie Gaudin, Canterbury Musical Parenting Association Inc.
Music is everywhere... all sounds are musical. Rhythm is in the way we walk and talk. Children are born into a world of sound and movement, responding to vibration when heard and felt. Their involvement with music can be enjoyable and soothing, and assists in the development of listening skills, concentration, co-ordination, co-operation, communication and memory. This session will give ways to stimulate different age groups with music at home, plus how to make a few home-made musical instruments, along with reminding us of a few songs we've probably forgotten along the way!
OPTION 4D: Grief Discussion - Karen Jefferson, Cheryl Cowden et al
A unique open discussion workshop answering your questions about all areas of losing a loved one and the grief process; with a collaberation of experts in their differing fields including Karen Jefferson (Trained Councellor & Bereavement Support, and mother of twins) and Cheryl Cowden (Funeral Director, Dignity with Sincerity Funeral Services).
